Modern Warsaw’s city centre is its most ambitious district, with a touch of nostalgia and a little madness. Communist-era heritage blends with ultramodern skyscrapers, while eclectic architecture creates a distinctly Warsaw atmosphere.
Behind the stylish façades and glass towers lies a complex history, from surviving late-nineteenth-century Art Nouveau gems to the tragedies of the Warsaw Ghetto and traces of the Second World War.
We will walk along the renewed, fashionable streets of Chmielna, Złota, Bracka and Szpitalna, and pause at Five Corners Square. At Powstańców Warszawy Square, formerly Napoleon Square, we will discuss the emperor’s influence on the city and the Warsaw Uprising. We will admire original Art Nouveau architecture, explore Poland’s communist past beside the iconic Palace of Culture and Science, and find a surviving fragment of the Warsaw Ghetto wall.
This tour of modern central Warsaw is for those who appreciate authentic big-city aesthetics, unexpected contrasts and the deeper meanings of history.
